Accurate Coding and Charting: How Claims Auditing Improves Medical Billing

Claims auditing is a core compliance function, but not always included in revenue cycle management (RCM) company service offerings.  In a recent presentation at a Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA) Regional Conference, Hal Nelson (VP of Anesthesia Services for MSN Healthcare Solutions) presented “Revenue Optimization and Risk Management Strategies for Anesthesiology Billing.”  His topic emphasized the necessity of accurate charting and proactive coding feedback to clinicians.

Mr. Nelson provided examples of how education helps ensure all required elements are documented in source documents to comply with Medicare Guidelines for Billing.  Examples included appropriate charting of anesthesia time, using operative reports to improve procedural and diagnosis coding specificity, and correctly charting care team anesthesia cases.  Ongoing communication with providers helps tighten documentation processes and can identify billing opportunities, as providers rely upon experts for this type of valuable feedback.

Mr. Nelson and Lisa Warren, CHC, Director of Pathology Services, represented MSN Healthcare Solutions at the meeting.  Ms. Warren has held a certification in healthcare compliance (CHC) since 2011 and served on the planning committee for the regional meeting, held in St. Louis, MO.
